Food Suggestions

Danish food is quite possibly some of the strangest food I've eaten, but some of the best as well! Here's a guide to Danish food as well as great restaurants that won't break the bank while abroad!

First, you must try french hotdogs while you're here. Inevitably you will, since I have one at least once a week since they are a great food on the go! Oddly enough, I've found the ones at 7-Eleven the most delicious. I like mine with ketchup, mustard AND french sauce. Yum!

Lakaghuset is an expensive Danish bakery that makes fabulous pastries. You can find one just a street over from DIS and all over the city. My favorite is the flat cinnamon roll with chocolate and vanilla frosting on top. I have no idea what it's called. Also lately they've had carrot muffins with cream cheese frosting - definitely worth investing in.

Cafe Paludan is a cozy bookstore located really close to DIS. It has great food and fantastic drinks, and is a warm atmosphere for group projects and coffee dates! I always order the cappuccino, which comes with a chocolate square and biscotti! They also have free internet - but watch out, it can get really crowded!

Sandwich Pidgin was one of the first places I went after classes started in August. They have a great variety of on-the-go sandwiches and give all DIS students a discount with your student ID! My favorite is the tuna salad with bell peppers and onions. All of their sandwiches also come with herb mayonnaise, tomatoes, lettuce and sprouts unless you tell them otherwise. The bread is fresh and warm - you can't go wrong! Take advantage of their daily special for even more savings!

Norrebro Brewhouse - this is the English name, the Danish is.. well, quite Danish and unpronounceable. Located across the lakes from the inner city (and DIS), this microbrewery offers a wide selection of beers and food! You can go casual and listen to live music downstairs in the cafe, or go all out and enjoy a full meal and sampling of beers in their upstairs restaurant. If you're in Copenhagen for the year, try the beer club - you get one free beer every Monday! I highly recommend the New York Lager. Classy, but also a bit on the expensive side.

Chili Milli is a fantastic vegetarian-friendly restaurant in the city center. It is buffet style - you pick a number of cold dishes and the price is based on how many you get. They also have falafel and amazing hummus. It's also about 2 blocks from DIS - a great place to grab food if you have a break between classes. Insiders note - everything is half price late at night!

So there you have some great food places in Copenhagen that are DIS student friendly and wallet friendly too (for the most part). I will continue to add to the list as I explore, there are so many cute places to go!
